It’s online downloads that makes this possible, and these are the people who are genuinely in it for the music not the money.
The latest musician to speak out with his opinions on filesharing is Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody. Although his band are hugely successful and far from being small and unsigned, he believes that being able to get music for free is just the modern way and that the punishments given to people caught filesharing are ‘way over the top’ and do not fir the crime. He was speaking specifically about the recent conviction in Sweden of four founding members of The Pirate Bay, who have each been given a one year jail sentence and told to pay $3.48 million in damages to several large entertainment companies. They are refusing to pay the fine and launching an appeal as although these companies quite probably were out of pocket, it was discovered that the judge conveniently happened to be a member of the Swedish Copyright Association with strong personal views on the case.
There is no sign of an end to the debate on filesharing and certainly no sign of a truce being reached. There is no question that it is damaging to the record label giants’ and huge stadium rock bands’ incomes, but at the same time it enables the little guys at home recording their tracks with an Akai home studio and set of headphones to get an equal chance of being heard. Maybe there is no right or wrong answer.
Guitars - handmade and custom guitars are still being built. This video shows a man who makes custom guitars, and it tells some interesting history of the guitars he’s made. Most of us aren’t in the market for a handmade guitar. The good news is that guitar manufacturers have some good guitars at affordable prices for us “regular” folks.
Maybe this is going to be your first guitar, or you are buying a better guitar (upgrading). Or, you may be wanting a different style of guitar or are just adding another instrument to a collection.
No matter your reason for buying a new guitar, do your research and homework first. The best places to do this research is in guitar shops, guitar magazines and, of course, check what is available online. Using these three methods, you can test out and compare guitar styles and investigate prices. You can also read many online blogs with great information about guitars and guitar lessons.
Ask guitarist friends for recommendations, look up all the information you can about guitar manufacturers, or read reviews in magazines or on the internet. If there are local music stores in your town, visit those stores and test out their guitars. Don’t worry about whether you play well, you just need to try different styles and brands to see which suits you best. Look carefully at the neck and body and make sure the guitar is not warped (especially check the neck to see that it is straight, not bowed in any way).
When you try out a guitar that you might want to buy, when you strum there should not be a buzzing sound. Make sure the strings are not too high up from the fretboard - this makes the guitar much harder to play.
To check an electric guitar, be sure to be plugged into an amplifier to check the sound and tone controls - make sure they work properly. Make sure the tone and volume controls are all working correctly. Most music stores have a salesperson that can play a guitar - have them play something on a few guitars. A really good option is to bring a guitarist friend to the stores with you so they can play the guitar and give you their opinions.
When you have a better idea about the current new guitar prices, you’ll be able to know how much to budget for your guitar purchase. You need to know the current prices and information about guitar brands before you try to negotiate with the guitar store salesperson. It’s their job to persuade you to spend money - and they are usually very skilled at making you spend more than you planned to.

Angus Young -AC/DC. Angus Young could be the most famous Gibson guitar player ever. The Austrialian has been playing a Gibson SG since they band were formed in 1973, and hes still playing the SG and still playing to the world. Slash. Slash, or better known as ‘Saul Hudson’, has been wailing away on a Les Paul since during the recording of rock band Gun and Roses most famous album ‘appetite for destruction’. Suprise piece of trvia: Hes not playing a Gibson, but a Les Paul copy on the album. It didnt seem to matter, as Slash’s use of the Les Paul increased sales in the 80s and made the instrument even more iconic. Slash now has his own signature model Gibson, but uses a 1987 Les Paul standard, which has had its neck repaired numerous times. Classic tracks: Welcome to the jungle, Sweet child of mine, Slither
Tony Iommi. The man who gave us the heavy metal guitar sound, Black Sabbath & Tony Iommi gave the world the extremely loud gift of heavy metal. Iommi lost his middle & index fingertips in an industral accident and had to relearn to play guitar all over again -inspired by Django Rienhardt, who had limited use of his 3rd and 4th fingers. Iommi has been playing with a Gibson SG since the recording of the first Black Sabbath album when his Fender’s neck pickup broke and hasnt returned to them since. Zakk Wylde. Ozzy bought Zakk into his solo band after being sent a tape of him playing, and Wylde has been playing with him on and off ever since. Wylde also plays guitar in his ’side project’ band, the black label society, which has its own following. Wylde is best know for his Les Paul customs, with ‘bullseye’ paint job, with has its own signature range, and has been expanded to include a guitar which is a cross between a flying v and a SG into the range. A beat maker these days usually requires a download that you then install on your computer. The internet has made it very easy to download a beat maker and try it out on your computer. This means that you can essentially try out as many beat makers as you like before you purchase one. This is a nice change from the old days when you had to purchase the software and try it out while you crossed your fingers and hoped you didn’t waist your hard earned money.
A beat maker will usually provide 16 tracks which can allow a song writer to layer their beat or song. This layering effect provides the different sounds you might hear including the drum, sneer, hi-hat etc. You can also take these 16 tracks, and depending on the beat maker, bounce those onto one of the tracks leaving you with 15 more tracks to work with and so-on and so-forth. However, just because you use more tracks there is no guarantee the song your are writing will sound better. In fact sometimes a simple beat is all you need.
Obviously each track is going to have a volume control slider so you can adjust the mix to meet your needs. There is also going to be a tempo setting for the entire song as well. This will work with something called ‘beats per minute’ or BPM. So if you have a song at 120 BPM this means that every minute 120 beats will be played (of course they don’t all have to be used.). Along with that feature, there might be a measure setting, meaning 4/4 time or 3/4 time etc (which has to do with the beats per measure).
Virtual beat makers allow you to add the sounds by assigning a sound to a specific beat. Typically, a measure will loop round-and-round and you can assign a sneer drum to every other beat for instance, and then when it loops around again you will hear the sneer on every other beat. Then you can add other sounds using the other tracks at your disposal. This makes it very easy to create a beat in a very short amount of time. The newer beat makers will have a piano key-set as well so you can add piano sounds, bass-lines, guitar parts or vocal samples etc. (without having to buy any hardware). This is nice if you want to make the entire song from start to finish using an inexpensive virtual music beat maker.
One of the most important things to look for in a beat maker is the quality of the sound library you have access to. If the sound of the samples is poor, then no matter how good your beat, you will be frustrated with the final product.
Once you have produced your hip-hop or rap beat you can usually convert this to an mp3 with the click of a button. This is a feature you should definitely look for in a beat maker and the more exporting options available, the better. Many people will make a quick loop in the beat maker and then transfer the mp3 to a more sophisticated multi-track sequencer for further polishing.
So to re-cap, you should look for at least a 16 track sequencer, individual controls for the volume, tempo control, and high quality samples as well as an easy-to-use export option. Other than that, it is important to shop around and try out as many beat makers as possible so you know what you like and don’t like about the different software interfaces.
There’s always controversy it is suggested that musicians have included subliminal messages in their songs, however the truth is that subliminal messages songs have been around for decades. People worry that the bands are using thee hidden messages to influence our minds.
There have been claims of rock bands using reverse subliminal messages in their songs and albums. Originally, it all started with Led Zeppelin when it was discovered that there were satanic messages if you played their hit song Stairway to Heaven backwards. Since then similar messages have been found in various songs from artists from every musical genre possible - from country to rock, and dance to pop.
If you were to play the song forwards as normal you would never even notice the hidden messages. Only once you play the song in reverse will the true hidden message be revealed. This may sound pretty harmless..
