Age Is No Barrier To Learning The Piano!
If you are a more mature person learning to play the piano, maybe over 40 like me, you may get frustrated or impatient with your progress and there are a few things that I remind myself about when I begin to feel this way.
Firstly, I remind myself why I am learning the piano; that I am learning for me and that I am not in competition with anyone; that I am not auditioning and that I am learning to play for fun and to give myself a sense of achievement. Learning the piano does take some time and effort, but when I go back and play some of the pieces I learned in the beginning of the course, I realize how easy they are now and how much progress I have made and then it all seems worthwhile!
Secondly, I remind myself that it is harder to learn new skills as you get older. We hate to admit it, but it is true. Children are much more adept at learning; their fingers are more nimble and their brains not quite so forgetful! So I remind myself that it does not matter how long it takes me to learn as long as I am enjoying the process. I then may play some of my earlier pieces of music to give myself a confidence boost.
Lastly, I take a look at the music I am learning. Am I learning music that I can use to entertain others or myself? Do I even enjoy what I am learning? I try to make sure that I learn the music I enjoy. I can download extra music from the net or buy it or get it from the library. So, along with your regular lesson book, try to play music that you really want to.
So always try to have some fun when you are learning the piano and remember you are learning for you and not others.
